What Is Spa Leak Detection?

Spa leak detection is the process of finding exactly where a hot tub, built-in spa, or attached pool/spa is losing water. While the fundamentals are similar to pool leak detection, spas present specific challenges: smaller water volumes, higher temperatures, denser plumbing, more jets, and often different shell materials like acrylic or fiberglass. Detection on a spa requires different techniques and a different eye.

A spa losing water adds up faster than you'd think. With a small total volume, even a slow leak can drop the water below jet level overnight, expose the heater, trip the pressure switch, and shut the spa down. Catching a spa leak early prevents equipment damage and avoids replacement costs that often exceed the value of the repair itself.

Types of Spas We Detect Leaks On

Built-in masonry spas. Gunite or concrete spas, often with plaster or pebble interior, attached to a pool or freestanding. Same construction as a pool, just smaller — and usually with denser plumbing.

Pool/spa combos. Spas attached to and sharing plumbing with a swimming pool, including spillover spas. The shared plumbing means a leak can show up in either the pool, the spa, or somewhere in between.

Fiberglass and acrylic spas. One-piece molded shells with all plumbing routed inside the shell or the cabinet. These leak in different ways than masonry spas — usually at jet seals, plumbing connections, or hairline cracks in the shell.

Standalone hot tubs. Portable spas with self-contained equipment. Leaks here are usually inside the cabinet at plumbing connections, pump seals, heater unions, or jet bodies.

Swim spas. Larger acrylic spas with swim jets. Larger volume, more plumbing, more potential leak points.

Signs Your Spa Is Leaking

• Water level drops noticeably overnight or within a few days
• Water under the spa cabinet (for portable spas) or wet spots near the spa equipment pad
• Soggy ground or sinking soil near a built-in spa

• Visible cracks in the shell, jets, or plumbing

Our Spa Leak Detection Process

The process is similar to pool leak detection, but adapted for spa-specific construction:

Step 1 — Bucket test confirmation. If you haven't confirmed the leak with a bucket test, we'll do it on-site to separate evaporation from real water loss.

Step 2 — Visual and equipment inspection. We pull the cabinet panels (for portable spas) or open the equipment access (for built-in spas) and check every union, jet, pump seal, and plumbing connection visible.

Step 3 — Pressure testing. We isolate each plumbing run — jets, suctions, returns, blower lines — and pressure-test individually.

Step 4 — Dye testing. For shell cracks, jet leaks, and skimmer/weir failures, we introduce dye at suspected points to confirm where water is escaping.

Step 5 — Electronic detection. For underground plumbing on built-in spas or hidden plumbing on portable spas, we use electronic listening to acoustically locate leaks.

Step 6 — Written findings. You get a clear report of what we found and what it'll take to fix.

Why Spa Leaks Are Different from Pool Leaks

Not necessarily. Most spa leaks are repairable for a fraction of the cost of replacement. Get the leak diagnosed first — you'll know what your options are.

Can you detect leaks in a spa attached to a pool?

Yes. Pool/spa combos are common, and the shared plumbing means we test both systems together. Sometimes the "spa leak" turns out to be a pool plumbing leak (or vice versa).

Will you have to drain my spa?

Usually not. Detection can almost always be done with the spa full. Some specific repairs may require partial draining.

My spa loses water only when it's running. Does that mean it's the plumbing?
