Pool Skimmer Leak Repair
Cracked skimmer throats, separated weirs, deck-skimmer joint failures — one of the most common pool leaks, and one of the most fixable when diagnosed correctly.

About Pool Skimmer Leak Repair
What Is Pool Skimmer Leak Repair?
Pool skimmer leak repair is the work of fixing leaks in or around the skimmer — the box-shaped fitting at the pool's edge that pulls surface water through your filter system. Skimmers are one of the most common sources of pool leaks. They're built of multiple components bonded together, they sit at the joint between two different building materials (pool shell and deck), and they're under constant water and structural stress.
If your pool's water level always drops to roughly the bottom of the skimmer mouth and then stops, you almost certainly have a skimmer leak. We repair them.
How Skimmers Fail
Skimmers leak in several specific places, and each one has its own repair method.
Cracked skimmer throat. The molded plastic body of the skimmer cracks from ground movement, freeze damage (rare in warm climates but real where freezes happen), or impact. Cracks usually appear at the joint between the skimmer body and the pool wall. Water leaks behind the skimmer into the surrounding ground.
Skimmer-to-deck joint failure. Where the deck meets the top of the skimmer, mastic or sealant fails over time. Water seeps down between deck and skimmer, into the soil behind the pool wall.
Skimmer-to-shell separation. The skimmer is bonded to the gunite shell during construction. Years of expansion, contraction, and ground movement can crack the bond. Water escapes through the separation into the surrounding ground.
Equalizer line failure. Some skimmers have an equalizer (or "equalize") line — a secondary suction line that pulls water from below the skimmer in case the skimmer water level drops. When the equalizer fitting cracks or its plug fails, water leaks out continuously.
Weir door failure. The flap inside the skimmer that floats up and down with water level. A failed weir door doesn't cause a leak directly but can mask other problems.
Plumbing connection at the skimmer. PVC plumbing entering the bottom of the skimmer can crack, separate, or leak at fittings.
Signs of a Skimmer Leak
- Water level drops to the bottom of the skimmer mouth and stops
- Wet or soggy soil behind the pool wall near the skimmer
- Settling concrete deck near the skimmer
- Visible cracks in the skimmer throat or face
- Mastic separation between deck and skimmer
- Air being drawn in through the skimmer when the pump runs (suction-side leak in skimmer plumbing or equalizer)
- Erosion or voids visible behind the skimmer
Our Skimmer Repair Process
Step 1 — Confirm the leak source. Multiple skimmer issues can produce similar symptoms. We confirm with dye testing and pressure isolation before recommending a repair.
Step 2 — Choose the right repair. Skimmer repairs range from simple sealing (10 minutes) to full skimmer replacement (multi-day). We pick the smallest effective repair.
Step 3 — Execute the repair. Most skimmer leak repairs are same-day or completed in one visit.
Step 4 — Test and verify. We test the repair with dye and water-level monitoring before considering the job done.
Repair Methods
- Hairline crack in skimmer throat: Underwater epoxy injection
- Larger throat crack: V-out and structural epoxy patch
- Skimmer-to-deck joint failure: Remove old mastic, re-seal joint
- Skimmer-to-shell separation: Hydraulic cement and epoxy patch
- Equalizer line plug failure: Replace plug
- Equalizer fitting crack: Cut out, replace fitting
- Weir door failure: Replace weir door
- Plumbing crack at skimmer base: Excavate, replace plumbing
- Severe skimmer body damage: Full skimmer replacement
Why Skimmer Leaks Are Often Misdiagnosed
A pool that drops to skimmer level looks like a skimmer leak — but it can also be a return-line leak that bleeds water out only when the pump runs (and stops at skimmer level when the pump shuts off because the pump can't pull air below the skimmer). Or it could be a leak in the equalizer that only acts up under certain pressure conditions.
This is why we test before we repair. Replacing a skimmer that wasn't actually leaking is a waste of money — and it doesn't fix the real problem.
Cost & Timeline
Most skimmer repairs are completed in 1 to 4 hours in a single visit. Pricing depends on the type of repair: a sealant or weir replacement is inexpensive; a full skimmer replacement requiring deck removal is more involved. We quote everything upfront.
Pool Skimmer Repair FAQ
My pool always drops to the skimmer mouth — is that always a skimmer leak?
Usually, but not always. We test to confirm. Sometimes a return-line leak produces the same symptom because the pump pulls air once water drops below skimmer level.
Can a skimmer be repaired without replacing the whole thing?
Yes, in most cases. Cracks, joint failures, and plumbing issues can almost always be repaired without removing the skimmer. Full replacement is reserved for severe damage.
Will you have to break up my deck?
Usually no. Most skimmer repairs are done from inside the skimmer or by working at the deck-skimmer joint. Full replacement is the only scenario that may require deck removal — and even then, only the section directly above the skimmer.
Why does my skimmer leak only sometimes?
Skimmer leaks can be intermittent — temperature, water level, and pump pressure all affect when a leak shows up. We test under multiple conditions to find the real source.
How long does the repair last?
A properly executed skimmer repair using the right materials should last many years. Full skimmer replacements last as long as the original skimmer would have — typically decades.
Do skimmers leak more in older pools?
Yes. Older pools have older skimmers, more ground movement, and more accumulated sealant failure. Skimmer leaks are one of the most common reasons we get called to pools 15+ years old.
