Las Vegas Pool Skimmer Leak Repair

Skimmer leaks are one of the most common Las Vegas pool repair categories. And they're also one of the most underdiagnosed. Many pool owners notice their pool dropping but assume the leak is somewhere mysterious. Often it's the skimmer: a throat crack, a separated deck-skimmer joint, a failed equalizer plug, or a cracked face plate. Most Las Vegas skimmer leaks are repairable without full skimmer replacement, and most repairs are completed same-visit.

Las Vegas Skimmer Failure Patterns

Las Vegas skimmer leak repair work concentrates around predictable failure points tied to skimmer age, construction era, and local conditions.

Throat cracks. The skimmer throat. The narrow opening connecting the skimmer body to the pool wall. Is a stress concentration point. Caliche substrate movement, pool wall flex, and decades of thermal cycling combine to crack throats at characteristic locations. Throat cracks typically leak slowly but persistently. Repair involves epoxy injection from inside the skimmer, then re-plastering the throat surface. Same-visit on most pools.

Deck-skimmer joint failures. The mastic or grout joint between the skimmer top and the surrounding deck fails as a function of accumulated thermal expansion and contraction. Las Vegas extreme temperature swings stress this joint thousands of times over decades. Failed joints let water drain behind the pool wall into surrounding soil. Repair involves cleaning the joint and re-sealing with appropriate flexible mastic. Same-visit, inexpensive.

Equalizer line failures. Older Las Vegas pools (mostly East LV, Charleston Heights, Downtown, Sunrise Manor) have equalizer plumbing. Secondary suction below the skimmer that was standard construction in earlier eras. Equalizer plugs degrade, equalizer fittings crack, and underground equalizer lines themselves fail. Plug and fitting repairs are same-visit; underground equalizer line replacement may require excavation.

Weir door failures. The flap inside the skimmer (the weir door) keeps debris from washing back into the pool when the pump cycles off. Failed weir doors don't usually cause leaks directly, but a weir door stuck open can mask other leak symptoms. We address weir doors as part of skimmer service.

Skimmer face plate cracks. The face plate around the skimmer opening can crack from impact, ground movement, or accumulated calcium-driven stress. Replacement is straightforward. Same-visit.

Skimmer body cracks. Skimmer body cracks in the gunite construction itself are less common but more serious. Repair may involve epoxy injection or, for severe damage, full skimmer rebuild.

Skimmer plumbing connection failures. The plumbing connections from the skimmer to the equipment pad fail at characteristic points. Usually at glued joints or fittings near the skimmer body. Most are same-visit replacement repairs.

Pool/spa combo skimmer considerations. Pools with attached spas often have separate spa skimmers with their own failure patterns. We work both pool and spa skimmers.

Skimmer Repair vs. Replacement

Most Las Vegas skimmer leaks are repairable without full replacement. Throat cracks get epoxy injection. Joints get re-sealed. Equalizer plumbing gets replaced. Face plates get swapped. Full skimmer replacement is reserved for severely damaged units with multiple structural issues. Typically only on very old or very degraded pools.

Las Vegas Skimmer Repair FAQ

My Las Vegas pool skimmer is cracked. Does it need full replacement?

Almost never. Throat cracks, joint failures, and equalizer issues all have established repair methods that don't require full skimmer replacement.

My pool only loses water down to the skimmer level, then stops. Is that a skimmer leak?

Yes, almost certainly. When water drops to the bottom of the skimmer opening and stops, that's a classic skimmer leak signature. The repair is usually straightforward.

Can you repair Las Vegas equalizer line failures?

Yes. Equalizer plugs, fittings, and underground equalizer plumbing are all repairable. Most plug and fitting work is same-visit.

Will you have to drain my Las Vegas pool to repair the skimmer?

Usually not. Most skimmer repairs (throat cracks, joint failures, plumbing connections) are done with the pool full or partially lowered. Full skimmer rebuild is the rare exception that may require partial draining.

Do you handle both pool and spa skimmer repair?

Yes. Pools with attached spas often have separate spa skimmers. We work both.
